(1928- )
   film producer, director
   Born in Ixelles, Belgium, Agnès Varda, who was at first a photographer, formed a production company to produce her first film, La Pointe courte (1956), which was a precursor to the Nouvelle Vague (New Wave) film genre. She then produced three short subject films: Ô saisons, ô châteaux (1957); Opéra Mouffe, on the rue Mouffetard); and Du côte de la côte (1958). Her second full-length film, Cléo de cinq à sept (1961), brought her to public attention. This film, with its tragic scenario, is presented in an intimate, delicate, and warm style, with great freedom in its direction. Following this Cléo were Le Bonheur (1964), Daguerréotypes (documentary, 1975), L'une chante, l'autre pas (1977), Sans toit ni loi (1985) and, in a poignant homage to her late companion, Jacques demy, Jacquot de Nantes (1991).
